Duration

1 Day

Location

Sigiriya

  • The Kandy to Sigiriya day trip commences after the guests have their breakfast from their overnight hotel.
  • The tour consists of many amazing destinations; the first destination is the Matale Hindu Temple. Matale Hindu Temple is named the “Muthumariamman Temple,” with "Muthu" meaning Pearl, "Mari" meaning rain, and "Amman" meaning mother. The temple is devoted to the goddess Mariamman, believed to be the goddess of rain and fertility. Both Buddhist and Hindu people worship this temple, and the Hindu community often uses its wedding hall for marriages. The main religious event, the chariot festival celebrated in March, is a festive event to witness.
  • Then the tour takes you to the Spice Garden in Matale. This enchanting place allows visitors to wander through scented greenery while gaining useful knowledge about spices and their applications in enhancing meals, cosmetics, and medicine.
  • After the Spice Garden, the next destinations are the Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Visitors can decide the order in which to visit these two destinations. These locations are the main highlights of the Kandy to Sigiriya Day Tour. Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is an ancient fortress built by King Kashyapa and served as his new capital. This UNESCO-listed world heritage site rises 180 meters high and features a gateway resembling an enormous lion. Pidurangala Rock, located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya, offers a peaceful view of Sigiriya and its surroundings. Standing 199 meters tall, Pidurangala Rock is a more adventurous climb and is steeped in its own rich history.
  • Following that, the next location is the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Dambulla Golden Temple. This sacred pilgrim site has been venerated for over 22 centuries and is the largest preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka. The temple features mural paintings covering an area of 2,100 m² and 157 statues. The five caves, built under a hanging rock about 150 meters tall, make this site a geological wonder. In 1982, a 15-meter statue and pagoda were added as part of a conservation project. UNESCO listed the temple as a heritage site to preserve its history and beauty.
